a brief prayer

Last night, after I read for a while, I turned out my light, laid my head on my pillow, and breathed this brief prayer, “Thank you, Lord, for saving my soul. I owe you…big time.”

I read Nehemiah this morning and was struck by the prayerful attitude of this man. The whole second half of chapter 1 is a prayer of confession and intercession. And then we jump to chapter 2 where Nehemiah is about to ask a pagan king for permission and provision to go rebuild the wall around […]
I need you, Jesus, more today
More than I ever have before.
My soul is pained, my faith poor.
I’ve wandered and I’ve gone astray.
I need you, Jesus, more right now,
More than I have in times past,
More each day than the last,
Grace and mercy, bestow and endow.
I need you, Jesus, more this instant,

Gracious Father,
Grant that we, this year, would press deeper into your heart.
In Jesus name.
I’m sure, by now, most of you have heard of the shootings in Colorado. Please continue to pray. I have a friend who is at that YWAM base. She and eight others were mere minutes away from returning to the base after a bowling outing when she received a call telling them to stay away because […]

When my tongue is tied,
Whispers and shouts
Lie buried inside.
When I don’t know
What I should say,
The Spirit bestows
Prayers I can’t pray.
My soul sings out
When my tongue is tied,
Whispers and shouts
Lie buried inside.
Often I kneel in silence,
Amidst the warfare’s violence;
My soul is pained and weary,
My eyes, bloodshot and bleary,
And I yearn for your cheering presence.
But when […]
O soul of mine,
Do not refrain.
Press into the heart of your Redeemer.
And you will find
You will be changed,
Though others may laugh and call you a dreamer.
O heart of mine,
Do not deter,
Press into His heart, whatever it takes.
And you will find
You are astir
With passion for those for whom His heart breaks.
O spirit of mine,
Do […]
I really should stay here just a bit longer,
Yet something within me is restless, astir,
Compelling me to leave this trysting place,
Longing to go back, each footstep retrace.
Yet my spirit knows I should linger here,
Here where your presence quells my fear,
Where your whispered promises restore me;
Where I catch little glimpses into your glory.
Here I will linger […]
What does surrender mean? We throw that word around a lot in our Christian circles. But what does it really look like? I don’t have all the answers, but here are a few things that jump out at me about surrender.
Surrender is freedom from having to be right.
Surrender is laying down my weapons of self-righteousness.
Surrender […]
