Last night, I finished reading “The Shack.” Due to working on the house and other distractions, it took me a bit longer than I liked, but I did complete it.
I’d like to say a few things about this book. First of all, Mr. Young is a very gifted storyteller and writer. His vivid imagination and descriptive pen combine to make this book a delightful read.
I’d also like to add that this book is fiction. It is not a theological treatise.
Is there theology in this book? Oh, yeah. It is chock-full of profound and deep truths regarding God and His interaction with His children. I enjoyed all of the theology in this book and agreed with most of it.
But it is not a commentary.
I would also add that this is an emotional book. There were times, as was reading, that I literally laughed out loud. And there were times when tears welled up in my eyes. The combination of Mr. Young’s gifted storytelling and his grasp on certain theological truths consistently engaged me.
Would I recommend this book? Absolutely.
I know some bookstores are putting warning labels on it.
And that’s okay. There are other “Christian” books out there that deserve such treatment, yet which are given a free pass by the evangelical community. Oh well.
Brant Hansen believes the “Left Behind” series should carry the “Read With Discernment” warning. I think I agree with him.
If you want your mind and spirit and soul to be engaged, read this book.
If you are fed up with religion and all of its facades, read this book.
If your relationship with God has dried up, read this book.
If you’ve experienced deep heartache, read this book.
If you are mad at the curse, read this book.
If you long for deeper intimacy with God, read this book.
If you like a good book, read this one.
Hmmmm, I could be wrong, but I think even the Bible should be read with discernment. Maybe not for the same reason as for The Shack, but still. I guess that for any books that do not bear the “read with discernment” warning, we should just read them unquestioningly. I sure like not having to think for myself!
Yeah, I think the Bible, out of all the books out there, shakes the status quo Christian. Believe me, I know.
Good points, Tim.
I need to read this book. Thanks for the suggestion Nathanimal.
You need to read this book, B-Mac.
It’s not a suggestion.
It’s a command.
i find it kind of funny that the ‘read with discerment’ books and authors are some of my favorite and most inspiring reads… haha. does that make me a rebel christian? i certainly hope so!
I think Jesus might be a rebel Christian.
So you’re in good company, Suse.
