obstacle-removers
Sep 15th, 2008 by Nathanael
As we press into the heart of God, we discover that He removes obstacles and breaks down strongholds that are keeping us from being closer to Him. Most of these obstacles and strongholds are ones that we’ve created through sin or even through religion. And as He breaks them down and draws us closer to Himself, He calls us to help remove others’ obstacles.
The prophet Isaiah wrote, “Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people” (Isaiah 57.14).
The sad thing is how sometimes Christians, myself included, have actually created obstacles–with the best intentions–that have kept others from close fellowship with the risen Christ. The prophet here is reminding us that as our obstacles are removed, and as our strongholds are cast down, we are freed up to be obstacle-removers in the lives of those around us.
Sometimes I think it’s hard to tell when you’re doing something that might create an obstacle for someone else. Do you know how one might discern what will tear down obstacles from what will create them?
It is hard to tell sometimes. I think the simplest way to tell is whether or not our actions are drawing them closer to Christ, or closer to a system. The late, great Oswald Chambers once said something along the lines of, “Are we making disciples of our creed, or disciples of Jesus?” I’m obviously paraphrasing. But I believe that is one of the tests of being an obstacle-creater or one who tears them down.
I love theology. I love studying. But sometimes theology can keep me from my Jesus. Someone else, I can’t remember who, said that theology is a good servant, but a bad master.
So are my actions drawing people closer to an interpretation of the scriptures? Or are they drawing them closer to the risen Christ?
Just a few thoughts.
Shalom
Thanks
Sure thing…thanks for asking.
Have a great weekend.
