I am His brother
Feb 8th, 2008 by Nathanael
In the midst of the anguish and agony of the language of Psalm 22, we find an amazing statement. Tucked in with all of the verbiage of torment and torture of this graphic Messianic Psalm, we read, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you” (v. 22). And when the writer of Hebrews cites this quote, they make sure we understand that it is clear that Jesus is not ashamed to call us His brothers and sisters. We have the same Father.
So why do I try to prove to our Father that I am His child? He does not question the validity of my heritage. And yet it seems I am more concerned with proving my sonship than I am with just being a son.
It amazes me that Jesus is not ashamed to call me his brother. It really does.
You’re not ashamed to call me your brother?
Even though I have smoldered and smothered
The flame of faith you have given me?
Though I’m bound when I should be living free,
Forsaking you and pursuing another?
You’re not ashamed to call me your brother?
Though I’m selfish and ignore the needs of others?
Neglecting the plight of the widow and orphan,
Living a life of consumeristic extortion.
I’m ashamed of these things I discover.
You’re not ashamed to call me your brother?
To proclaim to all we have the same Father?
What love is this that loves in spite of
My selfish ambition and lack of love?
Your love selflessly seeks the good of others.
So, Jesus, my brother, my Redeemer and Lord,
May the love that you lavish and outpour,
Flow into my soul and from there overflow
To the hurting, the weary, to the lowest of low.
So in loving you and others, I find my reward.

This hit home. Its a good reminder to REST in our right to be called children of God. Not to STRIVE to be called children of God. This is amazing love - that He isn’t ashamed, despite what we are…and even more so that He doesn’t see what we are, but who we are in Christ. Thank you Nathanael!
