Borrowed Breath

Jesus, for so long I’ve known about you,
But now I want to truly know you.
I’ve tried for so long to live without you,
But now my religious seams show thru.

     Jesus, you’ve softened this heart before,
     I’m begging you, soften it again.
     For so long now, I’ve known you as “Lord,”
     But now I want to know you as Friend.

Jesus, intimacy is my heart’s desire,
To press in deeper with you alone,
To be refined by your holy fire,
To let you soften my heart of stone.

     Jesus, you’ve softened this heart before,
     I’m begging you, soften it again.
     For so long now, I’ve known you as “Lord,”
     But now I want to know you as Friend.

Jesus, I long for a relationship that lasts,
To know your heart, to hear your voice,
To befriend the friendless and outcasts,
To weep when you weep and rejoice when you rejoice.
